CHAPTER 19

As the waiters served the dessert to the wedding party, Dani and Arthur looked at each other and simultaneously sighed. They sat down at the kitchen counter and Arthur opened the bottle of wine he’d brought from his room, assuming they would need a glass of it following the dinner.

Chef Dumas’ helpers had left at six that evening, replaced by the wait staff for the dinner and the two young men in charge of cleaning up the dishes from the event. Other than the sounds coming from dishes being brought into the kitchen and the conversation of the staff, it was relatively quiet.

“How do you feel, Dani? You’re being very quiet, which is unusual for you. Anything wrong?” Arthur asked.

“No, not at all. I’m just relieved that tonight went so well. I thought it was a class act when the bride and groom asked us to come out and had everyone raise their glass in a toast to us. Think that sent a message to the evil female attendants.”

“I agree,” he said. “I like everything Amalie and Julien have chosen for their wedding. He seems to be from a great deal of wealth, and I have a feeling after seeing the jewelry on Amalie’s sister and mother, that she does, too. But even so, Amalie and Julien seem very down to earth.”

“Yes, but I have to be honest with you,” Dani said. “I’ll feel better about 6:00 tomorrow night, when the reception is over, and our commitment here has ended. You’re the professional here on things that can go wrong, but I just have a bad feeling, and I can’t shake it. It’s as though something is going to happen that is going to really throw a wrench in the works, but I have no idea what it is.”

“I called Matt when they got back from their day’s events, and by the way, they had another fabulous day, but I think even Matt is tired. And believe me, that guy is usually like the Energizer Bunny. He never winds down. I guess Nigel is committed to giving them the best experience they could have while they’re here.

“Anyway, Matt said he’ll be here with me tomorrow. He said he’d leave it up to Briana and Anna if they wanted to go somewhere tomorrow morning. Evidently they’ve been to almost all of the places that you’d planned out for them, so if they decide to take a break tomorrow, it’s not as if they’d be missing out on anything.”

“Good, with both of you doing garden patrol, I’ll feel a lot better. Reich told me that in addition to the usual security guards here at the chateau, he’s hired fifteen others that will be mixing with the guests, as well as others who will be on the property, and in the parking lot.

“Arthur, what about the cake being delivered tomorrow? With all the additional security, do you think there will be a problem?”

“No, I’ll call Reich and have him alert security, however, I do think it would be a good thing if the van or however it’s being delivered is checked.
